Ask yourself:
Ships are crowding Alaska waters. The smaller villages in Southeast Alaska are likewise saturated with tourists when one or more cruise ships docks for the day. I offer my opinion here on your odyssey to Alaska. Ready to buy your tour? Well, take Sitka, for instance. It is a very small town, and you can walk almost anywhere from where you are lightered. The former sawmill and Blue Lake is the end of the road to the north, and if you want to see this, you can take a cab. Don't worry about getting lost, there's only one road each direction. Sitka has great hiking trails, and you can get maps from the Ranger Station that show them all. This is a very enjoyable way to spend the day, and many have steps made of logs so you don't have to break trail to get to the top or your destination. Do you like MacDonalds? Sitka has the prettiest setting for ANY one of the huge chain... try it located about a mile from downtown en route to the ferry. Here again, if you're not on a tour, you can take a cab very quick and easily to reach it. Here I am getting carried away about Sitka, but the other towns have similar opportunities to explore on your own. The one thing you WILL have to take a land tour to do is kayaking... there's no private companies operating kayak tours, and this is a special delight, especially in Sitka, where you have so many islands and private coves.
Here are some good sites for just browsing cruises. There's also a great educational cruise with Explorer Cruises, but I don't have that site at hand.
